NDUM Representative at The 2nd Asean-India Youth Summit 2019

Building on the success of the 1st India-ASEAN Youth Summit, 2017, themed on Shared Values, Common Destiny, the India Foundation and Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India organised the 2nd ASEAN-India Youth Summit, held in Guwahati in the Northeastern Indian State of Assam from 3rd to 7th February 2019. The summit involves 93 youth representatives from nine ASEAN member countries Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippines and Laos, together with 80 from India.

The 2nd summit’s theme at ‘connectivity-pathway to shared prosperity’, provided platform for the delegates from ASEAN countries to interact with youth delegates from India on various topics such as physical and economic connectivity, governance and polity, cultural and historical linkages, entrepreneurship and skill development, and youth and socio-cultural connectivity.

Aimed at acknowledging the achievements of young leaders and professionals from India and ASEAN member countries, a youth awards session was held during this summit. The Young Awards recognises the hope and aspirations of youth of both India and ASEAN member countries. ASEAN-India Youth Awardees are the brand ambassadors who will help in strengthening and sensitizing the potentials of each country as well as making the people to people contact more strong and reliable. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister for Finance, Health & Family Welfare, PWD, Transformation & Development in the Government of Assam, India presented the Award to Dr. Tharishini Krishnan.

She did her first degree in International Relations in 2005 and furthered her Masters in Strategy and Security Analyses in 2008 at the National University of Malaysia. After joining as an academic staff at the National Defence University of Malaysia (NDUM), she went abroad to King’s College London in 2012 to pursue a PhD Degree on Contemporary India Research focusing on Malaysia-India maritime security cooperation at the Indian Ocean Region. She concurrently is a senior lecturer at the Department of Strategic Studies, Faculty of Defence Studies and Management, NDUM.
